Classroom Pedagogy

In this class, students will learn the foundations of classroom language teaching. Topics to be covered include lesson planning, classroom management, adapting lessons for students of different ages and levels, integrating technology into the classroom, and more.

Language Learning & The Structure of English

Students will be introduced to how people learn languages and the structure of the English language. Topics to be covered include the factors of successful language learning, different learning styles, the grammatical structure of English and the English sound system.

Teaching Speaking and Listening

Students will learn strategies for teaching ESL students how to speak and listen in English. Topics to be covered include teaching English pronunciation, teaching listening comprehension, teaching English conversation skills, corrective feedback, assessment and more.

Teaching Reading and Writing

Students will learn tools for teaching ESL students how to read and write in English. Topics to be covered include pre-reading/reading/post-reading skills, building vocabulary for reading in specific domains, process versus product approaches to writing, organizational and grammatical feedback and more.

Teaching Grammar

This class is a survey of the different English grammar structures students will teach to ESL students. The class will begin with easier structures of the kind taught to elementary-level students and progress through intermediate-level structures to advanced-level ones. Topics to be covered include how to present grammar structures to students, how to incorporate grammar into other activities, how to assess grammar learning and more.

Classroom Teaching Apprenticeship

The Classroom Teaching Apprenticeship (CTA) program pairs students with a mentor-teacher who will take them under their wing in a real-life ESL classroom. Over the course of their CTA, students will at first observe real ESL teaching in action, and then, gradually, come to participate in the actual teaching of the class.
